Roulette as we know it has been played since at least 1796, although its history goes back even further. Blaise Pascal is said to have invented the precursor to the Roulette wheel in the mid-1600s, in his ultimately futile attempt to create a perpetual motion machine. Pascal’s wheel would later be used as a random number generator for Biribi, a lottery game that featured the numbers 1 through 70 written on a tableau (“table” in French). That game became known as Roulette (“little wheel”) after some modifications were made over the years.
If you look at a standard Roulette wheel today, you’ll find either 37 or 38 numbers in use – depending on what part of the world you’re in. The American Roulette wheel has 38 numbers: 1 through 36, plus a zero (0) and a double-zero (00). This is the version of Roulette that was brought to the New World by French settlers, and remains popular to this day.
Meanwhile, back in Europe, a wheel featuring just the single zero was introduced in 1843 at a German casino, which hoped to attract customers by giving them better odds. This wheel (sometimes called the “French” wheel today, ironically enough) eventually became the standard for what is known as European Roulette. Thanks to the internet, you can play both American and European Roulette anytime you like at Slots.lv. Triple-Zero Roulette (with a 39th space marked “000”) made its debut in Las Vegas in 2018; this version has yet to appear online.
The Roulette wheel itself is a mechanical device with the numbers printed on top, along the outside edge, with a designated pocket for each number. This wheel is sent spinning in one direction; then, after everyone’s bets are taken, a small white Roulette ball is placed on the edge and spun in the opposite direction. The ball eventually lands in one of the pockets, and the winning bettors are paid out. When you play online Roulette at Slots.lv, the game is exactly the same as the live version, except for the mechanical part – the online software chooses the numbers at random.
To make Roulette easier to play, and more visually appealing, 16 of the numbers are marked in Red, 16 numbers in Black, and 0/00 in Green. You can bet on the Roulette ball landing in any one of those numbered pockets, or you can bet on more general outcomes, like whether the winning number will be Red or Black. These bets are made by placing chips on the layout next to the wheel, in the designated spot for that wager.

You’ll find almost all the same play bets as above when you play online European Roulette at Slots.lv, but with a couple of changes: Since there is no double-zero on the wheel, the Trio bets are 0-1-2 or 0-2-3, and the Top Line/Basket bet is 0-1-2-3. There are also some additional “call bets” you can make in European Roulette – but only if you’re playing the Classic version at Slots.lv. Here they are:
Voisins du Zéro (“Neighbors of Zero”): This is a bet for nine chips (multiples are allowed), covering the 17 numbers that appear closest to zero on the wheel. Two chips are bet on the 0-2-3 Trio, two more are placed on the 25-26-28-29 Corner, and one chip is placed on each Split for 4-7, 12-15, 18-21, 19-22 and 32-35.
Tiers du Cylindre (“Third of the Wheel”): This is a six-chip bet covering the 12 numbers farthest from zero. One chip is placed on each Split for 5-8, 10-11, 13-16, 23-24, 27-30 and 33-36.
Orphans: Also marked in French as Orphelins on some wheels, this is a five-chip bet on all the numbers not covered by the previous two bets. One Single chip is placed on 1, along with one chip on each Split for 6-9, 14-17, 17-20 and 31-34.
Fortunately, instead of placing all these chips yourself, you can just select the designated space on the additional racetrack-shaped oval you’ll find on the Classic European Roulette layout. You can also place a five-chip “Neighbors” bet for any of the 37 numbers on the oval; this casino play bet covers the chosen number on the Roulette wheel, plus the two adjacent numbers on either side.
At first blush, even if you only play online American Roulette at Slots.lv, all of the different bets you have at your fingertips can seem a bit overwhelming. But the important thing to remember is that the casino house edge on each play bet with real money is exactly the same for the game you’re playing – with one exception, which we’ll get to in a moment.
When you play European Roulette, the casino house edge on every bet is 2.70%. If you place a Single play bet, 20 Black for example, your odds of winning are 36/1, while your payout is 35/1; that works out to 2.70% when you do the math. If you simply bet on Black instead, your online casino play odds are 19/18, and your payout is even money – that also works out to 2.70%. With American Roulette, the added double-zero gives you slightly longer casino odds of winning, leading to a casino house edge of 5.26%. The exception is the Top Line/Basket bet, which checks in at 7.89%.
You may have heard of some casino strategies to beat Roulette, like the infamous Martingale system, where you simply double your even-money bet (Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low) after every loss – eventually, your bet will win and cover all of your previous losses. The problem with the Martingale, and all other Roulette betting systems, is that you might work through your bankroll, or hit the table maximum, before you get to place that winning bet. Don’t fall for the Gambler’s Fallacy, aka the Maturity of Chance; if Black comes up five times in a row, Red still has the exact same chance of coming up the sixth time.
You might not be able to manipulate your casino play bet sizes to make a long-term profit at Roulette, but you can (and should) plan your bets ahead of time in order to get the most entertainment value out of your session. Figure out how many spins you get in per hour, then look at the house edge and see what the ideal bet size would be for your bankroll in order to comfortably reach your desired average session length. Make that your standard casino bet size – don’t chase losses or hot streaks by increasing your casino play bet, or you’ll risk messing up your session plan. And as always, only play Roulette online with real money you can afford to lose. It won’t be much fun otherwise.
